Artificial Insemination

Artificial insemination is performed if the male cannot enter the female naturally. This can be due to a size difference or due to a personality difference. We collect the semen from the male while the female is present. We then inseminate immediately into the female. We can also inseminate frozen semen if you bring in the semen.

Dogs are the most fertile when bred 2 days after ovulation. LH blood levels give the most accurate timing of ovulation but needs to be taken daily. Progesterone levels give the next best timing accuracy and can be done every 2-3 days.

If you wish to have AI done, start bringing in the female 4 days after she starts bleeding. We will do vaginal cytology every 2 days until she is close to a standing heat and then will start taking progesterone sample. This gives the most economical way of timing the breeding.
