Herbal Medicine

Knowledge in herbal medicine is starting to grow in leaps and bounds. There are western herbs, such as Echinacea as well as Chinese herbs that are used in traditional Chinese medicine.

Herbs are actually just a more natural form of drug therapy. Because there are often a combination of chemicals in one herb, it is often touted as “safer” than conventional drugs. However, natural does not necessarily mean “safe”. Nightshade is an herb but is a very toxic plant. Foxglove contains the drug digitalis, which has been used for heart disease for years. However, too much is lethal.

There are a number of hazards to be aware of with herbs.

Issue of standardization of the quality of herbs

Issue of safety from heavy metals in some herbs

Dosages are extrapolated from human experience

Cats handle drugs differently, and you need to know what is safe in this species.

Many herbs taste bad so issue of administering is a problem.

Once you understand these risks, herbs can be used effectively in the right hands. We are just starting to look at how herbs can help us better manage some disease in animals, for which our conventional drugs seem to have no answer or too many side effects.
