The ideal age to perform castration of a male cat or dog is 6 months, but it can be performed at any age after. Neutering your pet helps prevent many annoying behavioural problems, which may develop with sexual maturity, as well as reduce his risk of many medical complications later in life. Although this surgery is usually not an open abdominal surgery, it still requires a general anesthesia. These surgeries are done very frequently; however, there is no such thing as a “routine procedure”. For this reason we recommend laboratory testing and the other precautions for all patients undergoing anesthesia.
Many of our neuters are sent home the same day. However, if you feel your pet would not be quiet the first night and might be too rambunctious, we suggest he stays the night in order to allow some healing to take place before high levels of activity occur. This is at no extra charge.
